Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (Cinema Review)
3.5/5
review by: Luke Chilton

If you enjoy giant bees, secret submarines and golden volcanoes, you will like Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. And let’s face it – who doesn’t like those things? (Well, except for the giant bees.)

A sequel to 2008’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Journey 2 is Indiana Jones-lite, strictly for a family audience. But while that series limped to disappointing conclusion with its final sequel, Journey 2 is a step up from its predecessor.

Last time’s leading man Brendan Fraser is out, with Dwane ‘The Rock’ Johnson replacing him as action-man Hank, while Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) returns as Hank’s errant step-son.

This time the “Veronoligists” (Jules Verne fan-boys who believe every word he wrote was true) are trying to find the author’s legendary Mysterious Island.

It’s just a shame that as soon as they finally arrive, they immediately have to get off it again (before it sinks) making the whole journey rather pointless.

Along for the ride are comedy tour guide Gabby (Luis Guzman) and his beautiful daughter Kailani (High School Musical’s Vanessa Hudgens).

Not to mention none other than Sir Michael Caine as Sean’s bonkers grandfather, whose battles with Hank to be the boy’s father figure form the emotional heart of the film.

But that’s not to say Journey 2 is short on laughs - one long scene involves the cast bouncing berries off each other’s nipples – plus there’s plenty of 3D action as the explorers dodge evil lizards, monstrous eels and even The Rock’s singing.

Something that was sadly missing from Indiana Jones 4….
