THE WHITE RIBBON is a tense drama set in a quiet but fearful village in Protestant northern Germany between 1913 -1914, on the eve of World War I.

The innocent children and teenagers of a choir run by a questionable village schoolteacher, and their families: the baron, the steward, the pastor, the doctor, the midwife, the tenant farmers. Slowly, strange inexplicable accidents occur, which gradually take on the character of a sinister punishment ritual. The villagers’ fingers start to point and question who is behind it all until a psychological witch-hunt ensues.

The village schoolteacher turns detective, observing, investigating and little by little discovering the incredible truth. Are we being asked to consider that these events heralded something that would explode years later with the rise of Nazi Germany? Did these perennial events contain the germs of the tragedies that followed?

Acclaimed auteur Michael Haneke (Hidden, Funny Games) returns to his classic themes of guilt, denial and violence in this haunting and provocative feature.
