Last Night (DVD Review)

‘Last Night’ sees Keira Knightley take the female lead alongside Sam Worthington in Massy Tadjedin’s directorial debut.  After attending a work’s drinks, Joanna’s (Knightley) suspicion is aroused by her husband’s (Worthington) attractive new colleague, Laura (Eva Mendes).  The ensuing argument leaves the audience aware of Joanna’s concerns, and Michael’s believable denial.  The following day sees Michael leave on a business trip, with Laura in toe, and Joanna unexpectedly running into an old friend, Alex (Guillaume Canet).  As the story progresses, we learn about the history of all four characters, and what that means for their current relationships.

This exploration of physical versus emotional adultery leaves the viewer raw with emotion as the natural script embodies the idiosyncrasies of life and insecurities facing any couple.  The slow revelation of history and secrets throughout the film is realistic and not only builds the undeniable tension, but adds to the audiences investment in those on screen.  This intimate snapshot of four people’s lives allows the film to escape Hollywood’s typical black/white, good guy/bad guy view of infidelity; all parties are likeable and encourage the audiences’ understanding and sympathy.

The acting is superb, essential for any film that relies so heavily on unglossed realism, and is another reminder why Knightley’s preference for lower budget films is faultless.  Joanna essentially holds the film together, a pressure which Knightley takes in her stride.  Mendes and Worthington are equally good; a nice surprise considering their previous action and rom-com CVs.

Despite a few cliches, including a typical sexy late night pool scene, ‘Last Night’ is an interesting watch.  Thought-provoking and dramatic, without much action, the storyline and script gives the viewer an intimate insight into one couples life.
