Supernatural Season 6 (DVD Review)

review by: Nneka Opara
Scary just got sexy. Or so we were told when we first met ghost hunting siblings Sam and Dean Winchester, who in spite of their exciting new show were not expected to last longer than a series or two.
Six years, a real life inter-cast marriage and many sci-fi conventions later, Supernatural is still going strong, and after watching a few episodes of Season 6 with more twists than a slippery slide, it’s easy to know why.
Dean (Jensen Ackles) is living a quiet suburban life far away from demon hunting, while quietly mourning the loss of brother Sam (Jared Padalecki), last seen saving the world by leaping into hell after he was possessed by the devil. But one thing you can count on with Supernatural is that nothing stays dead very long. Before you can say “who you gonna call?” Sam is mysteriously transported out of hell, and the brothers yet again take to the road battling vampires, demons, morally challenged angels, creatures from purgatory and everything in between.
There’s plenty to be impressed with when it comes to Supernatural. From the chuckle inducing bromance-on the road to the painstaking research that gives rise to the folk-lore based storylines, which have included an array of scary creatures from dragons to Wendigos (google it if in doubt), there’s rarely a dull moment. However watching Season 6 one couldn’t help but notice that the show attempts to be struggling to keep its flow. The reality is once all main characters have died several times, done a few stints in hell, and prevented a few apocalypses, where do you go next? As enjoyable as Supernatural is, it’s quite clear that the creators were not expecting to the show to last quite this long.
Unlike the critters chasing the boys, Supernatural can’t quite deliver that killer bite that first made it a fan favourite. Tons of fun? Tick. Easy on the eyes cast? Tick, A TV classic? Probably not.
