Come On Eileen (DVD Review)

review by: Ruth Walker
After she starts a new relationship with stoner Bill (Stephen Taylor), Eileen (Jackie Howe) lapses back to a troubled past .We watch as she relapses, resulting in the demise of her family.
One drink can’t hurt can it? Well its one drink that starts the dreadful episode all over again. Unable to cope with the pressures in her life Eileen turns to the bottle. Alcohol has always been her vice.
No sooner has she taken her first sinful sip that her children’s lives start falling to pieces.
Gypsy (Mercedes Grower) just wants to make it big. She yearns to be famous and not at all like her mother. But the burlesque dancer isn’t all that different from Eileen. She used to be dancer back in her heyday. Now she only dances when she’s trashed.
Jimmy (Felix Malcolm Still) is Eileen’s teenage son, he’s about to sit his GCSE exams. But after his mother’s relapse he becomes more focussed on her wellbeing than his education.
But eventually Jimmy gives up on his mother. He can’t bear to go through the heartbreak caused by her drinking all over again. So he runs away.
We next see Jimmy at a musical festival with a friend, there to watch Gypsy perform. She’s got her own problems though. Her boyfriend rock star boyfriend Rex (Noel Fielding) keeps pushing her away.
Can Eileen pull herself together to mend the pieces of her broken family? It’s either drink or them and ultimately the choice must be hers, and hers alone.
Come on Eileen is a low budget movie but that adds to the grittiness of the story. There is an obscure blend of darkness and humour that strikes a bittersweet chord. Howe’s performance as the lush Eileen is flawless. This movie is as good a portrayal of a drinking problem as you'll see.
Come on Eileen is available on DVD from 21st November 2011. |
