Horsemen (DVD Review)

Denis Quaid is a cop on the trail of the mystery of a series of ritualistic sacrifises.

Beware this film should not be confused with ‘The Horsemen’ the pathetic torture fest tosh.

At the beginning you kind of get the feeling that it’s going to be just another insipid formulaic cop chases killer vehicle but too its credit Horsemen rises just above the yawn threshold.

Quaid plays Aidan Breslin an obsessive married to the job kind of cop. Breslin, who on the home front lacks parenting skills and is struggling to bring up his two boys, is also trying to get to grips with a bizarre series of related deaths. But everything is not what it seems as turns and twists develop as Breslin gets nearer to working out the link between the deaths.

The film never really feels scary either visually or psychologically but does have some ‘Saw’ inspired moments that could put you off your dinner.

In the lead role Quaid does not bring much to the table and is not wholly convincing as his character. His acting feels laboured, lifeless and allows for too many of the strings to be shown in his performance. The same could be said for Barry Shabaka Henley who plays pathologist Tuck whose role appears to suffer from typecasting. On a plus point Ziyi Zhang (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The House of the Flying Daggers) is effective and watchable as the cold calculating Kristen

This is not the worst film of its type and in a genre that has been done to death it does have some redeeming qualities.
