True Blood Season 1 (DVD Review)

review by: Dan Pole
I must admit, I’m not the biggest fan of science fiction, more to the point, I’m not a huge fan of Vampire’s. I was assured True Blood was different.
It was.
True Blood has just concluded its second series and was first aired on 7th September 2008 on HBO, the same network who brought us the outstanding Six Feet Under and The Soprano’s.
The first series, now available on DVD, features five disks of the most surreal, exciting and blood-thirsty TV we have seen in the last decade. Unlike so many other Vampire offerings, True Blood is filmed in the realms of reality, rather than fictional settings where the mythical creature tends to rule.
Set in Bon Temps, a small fictional town in Louisiana, siblings Jason (Ryan Kwanten) and Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) take the lead roles, as the cast more than make up for the lack of A-list names with perfect timing and close on-screen relationships.
Sex-mad Jason offers a light-hearted alternative to Sookie’s more serious role, including her blossoming relationship with the only Vampire in the village, Bill Compton.
The last episode of the series one leaves the viewer hanging on, which means purchasing series two looks more of a certainty than a maybe, and although I wasn’t too sure before watching the first series, I admit that HBO has added yet another viewer to the already long list of True Blood fans.
A series that it is hard to turn off once you have pressed play, is fast becoming a modern day cult classic and with a third series just around the corner, and a range of merchandise now on sale, the True Blood bandwagon is gathering pace as it rolls out of Louisiana and makes its way across the globe. |
