Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (DVD Review)

The Transformers posse are back.

After the huge box office smash of the first movie a Transformers sequel was always on the cards.

The first movie silenced many that said it would be hard to make believable on screen. Come on even taking aside that the Hasbro toys are massively popular with different generations we are talking about massive talking robots who turn into cars and trucks and a host of other things. But yeah they did a good job. The epic struggle of the Autobots and the Decepticons with a nice angle with high school kid Sam Witwicky (Shia Labeouf) and of course his delectable sweetheart Mikaela (Megan Fox.) worked.

As a pure fairground visual stimulation ride the movie passes but special effects aside it does not follow up as a decent sequel. The original script writers where caught up in the Hollywood screen writers strike and the movie was still awaiting final cut on the day of its premiere in Hong Kong. That tells you that it might not have been a smooth production process and it shows. It feels disjointed, lacks a certain coherency and pace that the first movie had.

A lot of high concept green screen dazzlers seem to forget to inject a little humour into the proceedings relying to heavily in smashes, explosions and impressive set scenes. But a tiny little witty dialogue goes a long way. Some attempts at humour were tried in Revenge of the Fallen but they generally misfired.

As for displaying ‘the male gaze’ or female for that mater the movie really objectifies the charms of Megan Fox. Fox is shamelessly seen in all mater of lingering seductive poses but who, to her credit, revels in the hot girl next door type.

The Transformers follow up is typical of a lazy sequel cashing in on the original’s success. It’s watchable as mildly entertaining escapism but nothing more which is a shame.
