44 Inch Chest (Cinema Review)

review by: Sav D’Souza
A man is distraught after his wife tells him that’s she’s going leave him.
Colin Diamond (Ray Winstone) has gone to pieces. His long term wife Liz (Joanne Whalley) is leaving him and he’s finding it hard to cope.
At a deserted run down house Diamond is face-to-face with his wife’s lover and the company of a group of friends. Therein it’s essentially a film that revolves around the premise of will Diamond ‘let him ave it?’ Although the film never truly exposes how the group know each other it’s implied that they are possibly used to violence and maybe villains or gangsters of some kind. The group pitches in with their thoughts in the midst of Diamond’s soul searching. It’s interesting to watch Winstone at work doing his typical hard man turn but also vulnerable and lost dealing with the break up.
With much of the movie taking place in one room it feels a little like watching a play. It moves along at a nice pace so much in fact that when the movie ends you want further acts. Much of the dialogue between Diamond and co is rough and ready geezer talk which could have been a bit sharper but the characters are mildly interesting.
While this might have satisfied watching it at home you expect a little more when you venture out to the cinema For that reason alone it’s probably worth a hire at your local video shop when it’s released but your not missing much by giving it a miss at the cinema. |
