The Wolfman (Cinema Review)

review by: Sav D’Souza
Silly creature on the prowl movie which lacks any real bite.
Lawrence Talbot (Benicio Del Toro) is contacted by his brother’s fiancée Gwen Conliffe (Emily Blunt) after her husband has disappeared without trace. So Lawrence returns once again to his family estate and reunited with his estranged father Sir John Talbot (Anthony Hopkins). He discovers that all is not well as villagers have been mauled to death by a super strong creature of some kind.
For any one that has seen the classic 80s Michael J Fox movie Teen Wolf, well some of the scenes of The Wolfman being all scary and terrifying to be honest just made me laugh. That’s not to say that there weren’t lots of blood spilling and guts being pulled out and limbs yanked off but scary or chilling are not words I could ever use to describe this pretty poor movie.
It’s such a waste of talent, for starters Benicio Del Toro in probably the worst film I can remember him in. He does his job as you would expect but you can’t get round the fact he’s part of a weak production. You know it’s not good when Hopkins and Blunt, who was excellent in Sunshine Cleaning, feel miscast and put in distinctly average performances.
No getting round that this was a weak script with a poor story line and lack of discernible direction of sorts.
The only good thing about the film are some of the nice visuals capturing the period and the surroundings but that’s hardly a recommendation but may mean the location, set and scenery production teams will gain some plaudits. Also in an age of great CGI and other clever effects some of the scenes where The Wolfman is running on all fours look very amateurish.
A real howler. |
