Dread (DVD Review)

review by: Sav D’Souza
Clive Barker’s Dread finds three college students working on a film project which gets out of control.
Loner Stephen (Jackson Rathbone), extroverted Quaid (Shaun Evans) and pretty Cheryl (Hanne Sheen) come together to make a documentary studying people’s greatest and innermost fears.
And so volunteers sit in front of the camera to talk about what they are afraid of.
Quaid, the main driving force behind the project, starts off slightly unhinged and reveals the extent how disturbed he really is as the movie progresses. He starts to focus more on Cheryl and Stephen and also two of the volunteers filmed Joshua and Abby relishing playing a more active part in forcing them to confront their fears. Quaid has demons of his own as he tries to deal with his horrific past.
Although the premise and start of this film are engaging it really ends up quite predictable and aside from a Saw rip off psychological finale pretty un gripping.
It’s obviously a low budget production not a bad thing as plenty of films have worked well on no cash but with Evans as the weak lead and the movie having no great depth in the psychological department it ends up being just a silly teen hacker/chase fest.
A bit of a dud. |
