Chloe (DVD Review)

review by: Danielle Lee
Atom Egoyan’s remake of French thriller Nathalie stars Julianne Moore as a suspicious wife who goes to extreme lengths to test her husband’s (Liam Neeson) fidelity.
The film begins with an introduction to the everyday lives of the mysterious call-girl Chloe (Amanda Seyfried), outgoing and overfriendly lecturer David (Neeson) and sexually repressed gynaecologist Catherine (Moore).
After a chance encounter with Chloe, Catherine decides to hire the escort to find out once and for all whether her husband is faithful. This seemingly simple act inadvertently lands her family in danger.
Although you can see the twist a mile off, it is not the main pitfall of this supposed erotic thriller. The relationship between Catherine and David is so closed off and lifeless that you don’t really warm to the couple. It already feels like the marriage is drying up so, as the story unfolds, you don’t really care what happens.
The melancholic mise-en-scène sets the bleak tone to this film but it’s only when Catherine and Chloe’s arrangement fires up that you see some emotion and intensity.
What saves this film is the performances from Moore as she finds an escape - if not a little extreme - from her bored routine life. Seyfried also stands out as a confused seductress using her eyes to doe-eyed effect. Neeson provides a strong, if not minor, supporting role.
Chloe doesn’t necessarily live up to the thrills of its genre title but there is plenty of drama to maintain interest. |
