Juliette Binoche stars in a rambling drama sit in Tuscany.
The title of the film is the title of the book that English writer William Shimell (James Miller) has written about the perceived value of original works of art and their copies.
And so trying to weave the concept of perception to what is real and what is fake for viewers Iranian director Kiarostami directs a movie where we are ‘meant’ to keep guessing about what Elle (Juliette Binoche) and Miller are playing at, are they a real couple or just acting as they are?
Well whatever the rationale the movie just feels like eavesdropping on an old married couple who don’t appear to be getting on. Now being privy to a couple, together or not for real, not getting on is only interesting if they hold your attention but with Elle and Miller you would probably be likely to walk away through the boredom of their interaction and conversation.
Even given it’s not the greatest role and having to play alongside the extremely wooden Miller who is better known for his operatic voice Binoche is pretty good in her part and holds the whole thing together but still not enough for a positive recommendation. |
