Let Me In (DVD Review)

review by: Hayley Thorpe
The whole world has gone Vampire crazy since the new generation of Vampire novels and films that have swept the nation.
'Let Me In' is no different instead of it being an unlikely love story, it is about friendship and the struggle with loneliness and adolescence.
'Let Me In'- is a reference to the theory that the Vampire must be invited into the home of their victims.
The film is based on the Swedish novel Lat den Ratte Komma In (Let The Right One In) by John Ajvide Lindqvist.
The novel was originally set in Sweden in the 1800s but this is set in wintry New Mexico town in the present day.
A string of unexplained attacks sweep through the usually average some may say quiet town.
The film is predominantly based on Owen's struggle with bullies. The scenes where Owen (Kodi Smit-Mcphee) is beaten until he soils himself were horrific to watch.
The bullies often refer to him as 'little girl' and 'she'.
When social outcast Owen meets Abby (Chloe Moretz) outside their respective homes he's the kind and loving child that he is deep down.
All he wants is a friend, ironically the first thing Abby says to him is "We can't be friends."
Abby gives Owen the strength he needs to hit back at the bullies.
In doing so he felt proud to tell her that he'd hit back at the main perpetrator Kenny leaving him hospitalised.
This story is sweet yet horrific, the signs are there that Abby isn't your average twelve year-old girl.
The chilling moment that Owen learns the truth is heartbreaking but she would never hurt him.
Deep down she is just as lonely as he is.
If you enjoy Vampire fiction with a twist of horror this is definitely the film for you. |
