Frontlines – Fuel of War (Xbox 360 & PC)
4.5/5
review by: Ric Reeves

Set in 2028 when the World’s oil supplies are almost totally exhausted, Frontlines tells the story of the Russo-Chinese alliance’s unexpected attack on the Western coalition in the Middle-East. You are thrust into action on day one of the attack and you are under fire from the very first second of play. The gameplay is fast and frantic moving quickly on from mission to mission. The sound effects are big and brassy, explosions thumping out through the speakers. The games’ physics, based on the Havok engine, are generally very good although the odd quirk arises. An example being an enemy flying metres into the air from merely being shot in the foot.

You are assisted in your fight with one of the biggest armouries in gaming history and there is an endless array of vehicles and futuristic high-tech weaponry on offer. These are implemented well during the story mode but really come into their own in multiplayer.

The game has obviously been built around the multiplayer mode, being one of the few games to offer over 16 players (up to 32) on Xbox Live. The maps included in the online element of the game are vast even with the increased player cap. However, with the aforementioned vehicles (fighter jets, attack helicopters etc.) available to you, it’s easy to quickly get to where the action is.

Frontlines single player mode isn’t without its problems but gives the multiplayer mode all of the tools needed to become one of the biggest hits ever on Xbox Live. It is however up to Live’s user’s sense of teamwork and fair play to turn it into a classic.
