Fifa Street (DS, Xbox 360 & PS3)
review by: Ric Reeves
Hot on the heels of the extremely well received Fifa ’08, EA have released the first Fifa Street game for the next-gen consoles. For the uninitiated, unlike the simulation style of ’08, Fifa Street offers a more arcade variant, filled to the brim with tricks and skills. Games play like a cross between an Adidas advert and a dream where you outplay Christiano Ronaldo.
The learning curve is steep but you are aided by simple to master controls which quickly have you pulling off the moves you’d always dreamed of. Unfortunately whilst this at first seems like a good thing, it soon points to the main fault with this game, its complete lack of depth. On the first play through admittedly, you’ll have a lot of fun improving your timing and admiring the excellent graphics and caricatures of your favourite international players. However after you’ve played through the game, unlocking all of the ‘street’ teams in the process there is practically nothing more to offer the single player with zero replayability.
Multiplayer unfortunately offers much of the same, with play becoming quickly repetitive and in the face of a trick happy friend, EXTREMELY frustrating. The small size of the ‘street’ pitches also seems to take a shine off some of the goals, with sublime build up play over such a short distance being so easy, as to become ridiculous.
All in all though, Fifa Street 3 is a very solid game with stand out player animations and an excellent soundtrack, the up-tempo beats spurring you on. Perfectly suited to a night in with the guys.
