Dragonball Z: Burst Limit (Xbox 360)
review by: Gaz Deaves
There aren’t many gamers who haven’t come across Dragon Ball in one of its many forms over the last few years. The series is recognised by Guinness World Records as the most prolific comic-book licensed video game (a whopping 66 games in just over 20 years) and, more than a decade years after the final TV episode was first aired, there’s no sign of its popularity running out.
Burst Limit, as the latest in a long line of DBZ games, takes the form of a fast-paced beat-‘em-up, with characters from the series facing off against each other in 1-on-1 battles against either human or computer-controlled opponents. The controls are responsive and easy to pick up, and make good allowances for the kind of manoeuvres that fans of the show have come to expect – fast flurries of punches, teleportation, flying and the all-important fireballs are all well-represented here. Visually, the game stays true to the series’ roots, with bright colours and lively, anime-style characters and pretty, if sparse environments.
As with any long-running licensed game, Burst Limit is aimed squarely at Dragon Ball fans, and they are indeed well served here. But newcomers to the series, providing they can see past the dodgy voice acting, cheesy dialogue and impenetrable plot, will find a rewarding fighting game with plenty of multi-player depth and a generously lengthy single-player mode.
