Kirby’s Epic Yarn (Wii)
Nintendo

review by: Laura Proto
Kirby was out for a stroll in the peaceful kingdom of Dream Land when he came across a bright red tomato. Kirby loves tomatoes and couldn’t resist trying to eat it. Little did he know that this was a ‘metamato’ and it belonged to a mysterious sorcerer. This encounter was about to change Dream Land, and only Kirby would be able to restore it…
Kirby’s Epic Yarn is one of the most visually pleasing and creative platformers to date, and the style of the game is the perfect compliment to the character's charm and cuteness. The game is set out in a world of fabric, with Kirby himself made out of a looped piece of yarn. The environments Kirby explores are made out of a variety of materials, including quilts, yarn, string and buttons.
The gameplay itself is extremely simple and will be relatively easy to anyone who has played a platform game. But unlike many other platform games, you can interact with the settings. To advance further along the level, Kirby will have to unzip parts of the scenery and swing on buttons or pull down fabrics in order to make a ledge come down to his level. Kirby can even push his way behind the fabrics and proceed behind them, with the game player using the bulge in the fabric as a way to control him.
If that didn’t sound cool enough, you’ll later discover that Kirby has many transforming abilities. He can turn into a dolphin to swim and jump with fluidity, a car to move faster along a straight surface, a fire engine to put out flames, and even a UFO to suck up beads and enemies and blast the entire screen.
On a whole, the game is relatively easy. Unlike other platform games like New Super Mario Bros, if Kirby falls off of the level or is hit by an enemy, you won’t lose a life as there isn’t any to lose! With that being said, collecting all the unlockables in each level is quite challenging. Make sure you progress through the levels carefully so you can fully explore for a chance to pick up a collectable item or a stamp to unlock a new level in that world.
If you want to take a break from the main platform game, you can head over to Kirby’s apartment and customise it with all the items you have collected throughout the levels. You can even use the beads you have collected to purchase even more items for your apartment!
And if you want to play Kirby's Epic Yarn with a friend, you can involve ‘Prince Fluff’ to help complete the levels in a co-op mode. Co-op mode will really increase your chances of getting all the collectables in each level too. The fun never ends with Kirby’s Epic Yarn and is perfect for adult and younger gamers alike.
