Movie adaptations have an incredibly bad record in video games, dating back to Atari’s disastrous version of E.T. in 1982 (consistently voted one of the worst games of all time). Thor isn’t quite that bad, but nor does it do much to repair the damage.

A prequel to the current blockbuster film, Thor: God of Thunder, sees the evil ice men attack Thor’s kingdom of Asgard, it’s up to him to defend his world with the help of his mighty hammer Mjolnir.

It’s an out and out actioner where most of the gameplay involves running around a closed arena and bashing an endless number of baddies until the round is clear.

Throughout the game you unlock increasingly powerful attack combos, unleashing thunder, lightning and wind. Each level ends with a gigantic boss, which Thor must stun then climb on top of to defeat.

Sadly, Thor: God of Thunder often turns into a button mashing mess, simply moving Thor around the screen, hitting the A button as fast as possible until all the enemies have been defeated. Lather, rinse and repeat for about two hours, and you’re done.

A character like Thor, a Norse God with such immense power that he can command the elements, should be incredibly fun to control. But blocky graphics, poor collision detection and clunky animation often see Thor and his hammer spring back and forth wildly across the screen.

Swinging around the hammer and smashing up Frost Giants is fun for the younger player, and fans of the film will enjoy the voice talents of stars Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Tom Hiddleston (villain Loki). The sheer variety of attacks gives Thor a slight edge of other predictable brawlers like Spiderman: Shattered Dimensions and Bayonetta, but it’s still an unpolished and frustrating game.
