For those who have ever wanted to be an ultimate fighting champion, but could never face the heat of the real deal, now there’s another way to get that testosterone pumped body you’ve always wanted. Unlike previous UFC games, this one won’t have you designing your own character and wrestling against the best. Instead, it will have you training with the best. UFC Personal Trainer will help “players” build muscle, lose weight and expand endurance.

The main workouts are known as activities and they generally consist of players selecting a pre-made training routine that focuses on different parts of the body. Each routine (and there are many) consists of a warm up, a selection of different activities and then a cool down.

A quick activity mode allows players to skip the long and soul draining search through all the different routines, to jump straight in and use a randomly selected workout. Players also have the option to customise a training routine. This offers plenty of personalisation to your own fitness regime and helps you focus exclusively on what you want.

The inclusion of a calendar mode really helps players who find it hard to maintain an exercise schedule. This mode offers the option of a 30 day or 60 day regime, which tracks your process and plans out specific workouts and when to do them.

There’s plenty of content to keep people entertained and working hard, but what you get out of it, like any exercise, is down to what you put it. So to those who think this is an easy way to get in great shape by playing a game, you’re wrong – there’s a lot of hard work involved. A big issue with the game is that the trainers (who are based on actual UFC coaches) are dull, unenthusiastic and don’t really support you or drive you to work hard. People need encouragement, not someone who shouts that you’re a failure when you don’t meet a set target.

This aside, the main problem with UFC lies not with the game, but the hardware in runs on. The PlayStation Move is inaccurate at times and the Kinect, like always, requires lots and lots of room. While it might just be easier to go to a gym, UFC Personal Trainer does give players something to stick to; an organised workout schedule with customisable options.
