port royal - Flared Up: Port Royal Remixed (Album)
4/5
review by: Martin Guttridge-Hewitt

With just 1,000 copies available worldwide, and rumoured to be some three years in the making, port-royal’s much hyped remixes album arrives to calm listeners with electronic lullabies for the 7am generation.

The artists involved should tell anyone with an interest in synthesized sounds that their in the right place, with the redux responsibilities falling to the likes of Manual, Minamo, Ulrich Schnauss and OPN.

Fizzarum’s remix of Jeka, appearing early on the disc, is enough to warrant a volume increase and the end of any distracting conversation. Beginning with its DJ Cam-esque off-key piano intro- all audio static and distortion- before the emotive and melodic track kicks in with the full effect of a freight train, albeit travelling really slowly, the track steps through staccato beat arrangements and odd hi-hats to create a movie score ambience of unequivocal lo-fi beauty.

Judith Juillerat proves a similarly discerning offering of the same track further into the album, which serves to highlight the quality of production on offer here in the re-iteration of the notion that the same tune, remixed twice, should be different both times, especially if appearing on the same disc.

With twelve tracks here from twelve minds of twelve artists, it would be futile to attempt to discuss each, suffice to say that they all offer a little bit of the same thing, differently.

If at all possible this long-player should not be missed. In making the most of the modern music’s ability to steal from everywhere and create something wholly new but familiar the Italian quartet’s package really is perfect for the journey, perfect for the morning and perfect for the night.
