Gavin Rossdale - Wanderlust (Album)
1/5

After a prolonged absence Gavin Rossdale has returned and one has to contemplate whether there is really any room for him in the credible musical landscape. Things have changed much since Bush called it a day in late 2002 due in part due to an apathetic record label, but also due to dwindling support from a fan base who had essentially moved on from the post-Grunge still being churned out by the band. Gavin didn’t have much luck as a solo artist either, 2004 saw 'Distort Yourself’ fall on deaf ears.

So what of Gavin Rossdale in 2008? Well the apathy towards his musical excursions must have taken its toll as this new batch of songs sound like a man who has given up on doing anything vaguely credible, instead going for the mullah. What we have here is a sampler of four songs that have already been released digitally and there’s nothing here that really holds your attention. His voice grates to astonishing effect on 'Future World’, which can also lay claim to one of the worst song titles ever considered. The emotion in the song sounds forced and this translates to the listener, falling flat through the speakers no matter how loud the volume.

'Another Night in the Hills’ is a slightly more lively affair but again it doesn’t really sound like he’s actually putting any real effort into it. It’s hard to take a married man with kids (who’s not much younger than my dad) seriously when he sings about pills and cocaine. I mean, come on, really? Surely age brings a new dimension to lyric writing?

To be honest, having enjoyed the music Bush made I’m really disappointed with what Gavin has come up with. I wasn’t expecting Bush but I was expecting something more exciting and fresh. It all sounds so childish for a man of his age. Surely he’s above juvenile 'love’ songs like 'Love Remains The Same’, which, it has to be said, is an obvious, an attempt to seduce the sheep like masses. Shouldn’t prove to hard, his wife managed it with equally tedious music.

Why 'Cant stop The World’ was passed over as lead single is a mystery what with it actually being quite good, it sounds more mature and in the lyric 'I don’t know what I was thinking.’ Gavin has never spoken a truer word. What were you thinking!
