Can you recall the first time you watched The Prodigy performing ‘Firestarter’? It was exciting, ebullient, outrageous, boisterous, frightening and even threatening. While I had all but ignored Liam, Keith and Maxim, that single performance had grabbed me by the shoulders, awoken me from my musical slumbers and tuned me into the new-rave scene.

Not for one minute am I suggesting that Don Diablo & Example is as capable as The Prodigy but listening to the band’s latest 8-track CD, which contains a radio edit, extended mix, a drive-by disco mix, a Spor remix, an A1 bassline remix, Doorly’s dub-step remix, a Diablo self-created mix and the Club Fuckers’ remix of the same basic track, I can hear some shouty, pointy, horny and gamey references that might make DD&E worth a closer listen in the not too distant.

It is loud, brash and exceptionally coarse, with a thumping bass-line, interrupting air-horns and the exceptionally hooky chorus of, “We Came, We Saw, We Killed The Crowd!”. I am unsurprised that this track and its various variations managed to top the Hype Machine charts throughout most of June 2009, carrying with them the customary ‘Kiss of Death’ from Radio One’s Zane Lowe. Example is the main man.

He is the brains behind this little extravaganza, as a singer, rapper, musician and producer, his intentions are to produce a new single for September, followed by a genre-busting album set for release in January 2010. You need not look for any particular order to this man’s musings, he will mix whatever he can lay hands on and has headlined the ‘Wonky Pop Tour’, which has led to a series of residencies in Ibiza this summer. While I shall grant you that ‘Hooligans’ is markedly different to what you may have been listening to recently, give this a try, you will become as equally hooked as I have been.
