Steve Bug - Collaboratory (Album Review)
Pokerflat Recordings
2/5
review by: Iain Robertson

To be quite frank, I do not know with whom or what Steve Bug has been working to create Collaboratory, his current oeuvre, but the prolific German ‘spin-meister’, Stefan Brgesch, is certainly more than capable of demonstrating that a bit of more intense collaboration might not go amiss with his latest release. Eleven tracks of trancy transcendentalism may well satisfy the over-enthusiastic crowds on Ibiza but they left me feeling more than a little hard done by.

The usual repetitive clicks, pops and pips, while manageable, should you be off your face on whatever your current poison might be, somehow demonstrate a distinct lack of creativity on behalf of a DJ-performer, whose long list of successful discs kick-started his voyage back in 1994. Okay. I apologise for being singularly unhelpful at the head of this review but his collaborations, which include Paris The Black Fu, Cassy, Cl, Virginia, Simon Flower, Donnacha Costello and Gigi must have been acquired on a very restricted budget, because the reworked single words and phraseology also show a lack of creative direction.

Of course, it could be that Steve is now seeking a more stripped down and naked style and on the third track, ‘Strong Moment’ (featuring the aforementioned Cassy), he does indulge in a little keyboard action to relieve the tedium. He does twist the strings a touch on track five. To be quite frank, I expect better from this guy. He has an outstanding track record and remains one of the most in-demand DJs on the Mediterranean island and coastline scenes. Yet, I feel that he ought to cancel a few gigs, take some time off and stray a little from his pragmatic Teutonic roots. Without a more intense study of what he has been producing of late, for his own label, Pokerflat Recordings, he does run the risk of emerging a bit ‘samey’ and I am darned sure that he needs a little shot of adrenalin every now and again.
