Whip It Soundtrack (Album Review)
Rhino Records
review by: Sav D’Souza
Director Drew Barrymore’s likeable and well received Whip It has a great soundtrack and so the soundtrack album was always going to be a sure success with those that loved the movie. For those who have not seen the movie it’s still a great compilation.
With a 58 song play list to choose from picking a selection from the movie’s soundtrack was always going to be a case of what to leave out.
So there are a few omissions from the film that you might have liked on the album for instance Radiohead’s “No Suprises” but you still get a cracking mix of 20 tunes and artists ranging from Cut Chemist featuring Hymnal to Dolly Parton.
It’s mainly a rock punk compilation with great energetic and feel good tracks such as ‘Pot Kettle Black’ Tilly and the Wall, ‘Sheena is a Punk Rocker’ Ramones and ‘Doing it Right’ The Go Team.
Recently having discovered The Raveonettes my personal favourite on the album is the deliciously dreamy ‘Dead Sound’. Also dig Jens Lekman’s ‘Your arms around me’ which sounds very Morrisey and Smiths like.
Although there are a few well known songs on the album there are also some nice tracks from bands that you might not have heard of before so the chance to discover some new music that has been hand picked.
As Barrymore says on the album blurb ‘This soundtrack is my mix tape for you’ and the gal’s got taste.
