review by Mary Isokariari

‘No Sanctuary’, the second album by ‘A Loss for Words’ a band from Boston, Massachusetts also known as ALFW, is an electric mix of old fashioned punk and catchy pop melodies. The band consists of Matt Arsenault on vocals, Mike Adams on bass/vocals, Nevada Smith on guitar/vocals, Jack McHugh on the drums and guitarist/vocals Marc Dangora.

The album opens with Honeymoon Eyes which showcases explosive riffs, solid guitar and drum work. The fast paced lyrics are sung with so much angst and conviction that it immediately sums up what the band are all about.

Tracks; Pray for Rain and Raining Excuses have a more indie/pop sound to them. Despite Raining Excuses sounding a little disjointed in places, both tracks echo the individual style that ‘A Loss for Words’ bring to their songs.

Pirouette, is a song destined to be a stadium anthem, whereas The Hammers Fall which sits well with the opening track is the least memorable song on the album.

A weak point of the album is the title track, No Sanctuary, a heavy metal rock song with shouty lyrics revealing the bands volume capacity. Jetsetter is the complete opposite, a mellow and stand out song on the album.

Apart from a few forgettable tracks, ‘No Sanctuary’ is a loud, punk/pop album with thumping beats and screaming riffs, a noise that will certainly get ‘A loss for Words’ noticed.

‘No Sanctuary’ by A Loss for Words was released on October 24th 2011 and is out now.
